When mentioning culture, dominance and legacy, those characteristics are usually in correlation with the Duke men's basketball program in the consistency the program has showed over the last 4 decades. With the departure of now Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, alot of uncertainty left the Blue Devils in a bit of mystery. One single season later where Manny Diaz is introduced as head coach, with dedication and hardwork from Nina King the Duke football program has been everything but a stepping stone program. Duke has excelled and exceeded expectations in year one under Diaz, which led to a 9-3 season, and a looming Gator Bowl appearance against Ole Miss.
With surprising news that the program All-time single season touchdown pass record leader Maalik Murphy, who transferred into the program from Texas a year ago deciding to leave after one year, left some at bay. Who would take over at helm after the news? Henry Belin who proceed QB1 for the Gator Bowl, but who would help lead the Blue Devils to continued success?
That answer was solidified last week with the news of ESPN's #1 ranked transfer Darian Mensah inking with Duke after just a single visit. The former Tulane quarterback talked about Manny Diaz selling pitch including not just football but the school as a collective.
Just a two-star recruit out of high school, Darian completed 65.7% of his passes this season, including throwing for 2,723 yards to 22 touchdowns, with just 6 interceptions. The dual threat quarterback is expected to compete in the off-season for the starting position, as coach Manny Diaz stated on the weekly presser, everyone comes into the program with a clean slate with nothing being handed out, but earned.
